REX LAKE OUTPOST
View Rex Lake Photo Gallery
Rex Lake lies in a basin of sedimentary rock, which is ideal habitat for crayfish. Where crayfish are abundant, so are small mouth bass, and Rex Lake has some of the largest, healthiest small mouth bass in Canada. "If youve ever wanted to add a trophy bass to your life list," says Gene Halley. "This is the place to do it."
Bring an ultra-light spinning rod with lots of spinners and surface lures, or a fly-rod with an abundant supply of hair frogs and minnow imitators. And dont be surprised if a yard-long northern pike appears out of nowhere and tries to bite your lure for himself. Rex Lake has a very healthy population of northerns and youll have your hands full bringing one into the boat.
Theres lots of potential for side trips out of Rex Lake. A 500 yard portage will take you to Little Rex Lake, where two fishing boats have been left for your exclusive use. Little Rex is famous for its walleye fishing, and youll probably want to take a few of the smaller ones back for a delicious feast on the deck of the cabin. However, anglers are required to release any fish they dont eat on site.
Another day, you can sample the northern pike fishing on Moose Lake, which is accessible via a 120 yard portage from Rex Lake. If you take sandwiches, a few drinks, and a plentiful selection of pike spoons, youll be busy all day catching pike. Says long-time guest Mike Season, "You can catch northern pike here until your arm is tired. They sometimes literally hit every cast."
The three bedroom cabin on Rex Lake is built of logs harvested from the area. Built new in 1999, this cabin is modeled after our other outposts with front walls filled with windows that offer the incredible views that all our camps are known for. Similarly, Rex Lake is fully equipped with modern appliances, hot and cold running water, indoor shower, and electric lights. It will accommodate six fishermen in wilderness comfort.
"The small mouth bass fishing on Rex is unbelievable. We usually walk the trail down to Little Rex Lake to catch our walleye, then over to Moose for some northern action. But I have to say theres nothing like the bass fishing on big Rex. Ive fished all over the place and Ive never seen anything like it. You can use a fly-rod, a spinning rod, whatever. Just about anything you throw in there, theyll hit it. Some days, when its just right, two guys can catch 100 bass. In fact, dont print this. I dont want anybody else to discover it."
