Kudos to the Fishing Trip Planner

October 1st, 2007

This post is dedicated to all those people who either volunteer or are elected to be the fishing trip leader / organizer for your party. On many occasions we at Halley’s Camps have discussed across the reservation desk our admiration for the person who must make all of the arrangements and ask all of the necessary questions on behalf of the group. This can be quite a daunting task with such a variety of accommodations, travel logistics, and fishing opportunities available - especially for the first timer. A big round of applause goes out to you!

Fly In Pike FishingTrophy Smallmouth Bass Fishing Now for the fishing photos…. pictured here are some great photos sent in by our guests on a mid September stay at Moosehorn Lake Outpost. Great photos! And finally… pictured below is a photo of George taken this past summer with a pretty nice muskie!

Trophy MuskieThe Caribou Falls Landing Construction Update: Well folks, there is no turning back now! Construction is in full swing on the new lodge at Caribou Falls Landing. The old store has been cleared out and demolished… gone forever. The site has been prepped, the footings have been set, and the foundation is being built as this newsletter is being written. Tune in next month for more updates!

Darn Good Fishing!

September 3rd, 2007

As we enter the final official month of fishing season at the camps, we really do have to say that summer went by much too fast… Although, we are expecting some pretty nice end-of-summer weather into September, sunny skies and moderate temperatures. Mix that up with some pretty darn good fishing and you have yourself a great fishing vacation! Even though the weather lets us down on occasion, the fish still bite, and the warm hospitality, crackling fire and delicious food at the end of the day more than makes up for it!

How many readers out there remember the old catch phrase “Save the magic - Catch and release!” used at the inception of our conservation fishing policy? Pictured on the right is a photo taken at One Man Lake Lodge - Jeff presents a first time angler with a Trophy Angler hat and a Trophy Angler Certificate after an excellent day on the water!

Out With The Old and In With The New

“Grandma’s house” was a great place to be as a kid. Located at Halley’s Caribou Falls Landing, the building was huge and full of great places and things to explore. It had enough bedrooms for the entire family to stay should the need have called for it, and in the early years the entire family was often there, helping out when it was busy or just visiting Grandma and Grandpa when it was not so busy.

Down the hall from the main living area was the office space, and adjacent to that was the convenience store. As times were different back then, perhaps simpler, perhaps not, the store held more than just convenience items. It was chock full of the general store items that one might imagine would come in handy in some way or another, and loads and loads of groceries. A bi-weekly trip to town was the standing order to replenish the stock and pick up any maintenance items that were needed. Below the house and store was workshop space and the “ice house”. Full of large blocks of ice that had been cut from the frozen lake, the ice would keep all summer insulated in a thick layer of sawdust.

It was quite the place. In the spring of 1986 the building that not only Grandma’s house, but was also the place from which Halley’s Camps and outposts had grown and blossomed, burned to the ground taking with it a piece of everyone’s heart. No one was injured, and the Halley’s being a resilient lot, set to work to do what needed to be done. As the center of operations for Caribou Falls Landing had been destroyed, a new office and store needed to be rebuilt, and fast as the opening of fishing season was quickly approaching. Family and friends came together and, with a plan of attack, built the current store and office at Caribou. It took a mere three weeks to construct, for that was all the time we could afford the project.

That was the old. The new is coming soon! In the works for Caribou is a new “Lodge” that will take the place of the old store / office. The new main building will be a fresh look and a welcome addition for all! We will keep you updated on the progress throughout the construction process.

Summer of the monster pike!

August 3rd, 2007

Trophy WalleyeJudging from the photos below, this is the summer of the monster northern pike. The fishing has been pretty terrific all around though! And Trapline lake Outpost is still the hot spot for those trophy walleyes - at least photo wise, that is! Pictured at the left is a 30 inch walleye from Trapline Lake Outpost, caught trolling with a Rapala X Rap.

Guest Comments: “Of course the guys have been coming to the outposts for 15 years…and we “women” catch the big ones on our first trip (to Caribou Falls Landing)! Thanks for a great week of fishing!”

39 inch northern pikeNorthern Pike FishingGuest Comments: “Kathy’s northern (photo left) was over 39 inches. This fish put on a good show splashing and diving time and again. Kathy was fishing with a jig and 8 lb line. Phyllis’s northern (photo right) was 35 inches and was netted holding onto a 12 inch walleye. I thought you would like to see the ones that didn’t get away, but were released to be caught again. Once again the women out fished the men.”

Below is a picture from Amber of Grandma and Chris out on the quad looking for berries. Today she went out picking and picked a couple gallons at least - They are the thickest Gram has ever seen!

Blueberry PickingWe just thought it would be nice include a picture of Gram still being able to get out and do what she loves! Grandma has always done her best to keep all the camps stocked up with blueberries.

For as long as I can remember, picking berries was a must do, and at least once a season, she had us grandkids in tow for company and an extra hand at picking. Although, I don’t really remember us kids actually filling up any buckets at all, as it was usually hot and dry, and more of the blueberries ended up in our stomachs than in the pail. That didn’t really matter much even though gram would chide us for eating more than we picked, and we always ended up heading home with gallons upon gallons of blueberries.

Once home, the berries would get a rudimentary sorting from any stray leaves or twigs that may have ended up in the mix by gently pouring the berries from one container to another and allowing the wind to separate the debris from the fruit, winnow style. Then would come the blueberry pies, blueberries and cream, and an all time favourite, blueberry pancakes. Delicious!

Water, water everywhere - and all of it full of fish!

July 25th, 2007

What a month June was - a mix of weather from hot to mild, with a few wild overnight rain and thunder storms thrown in for good measure. And the fishing has remained consistently fabulous through it all.

Routine FallsAt the left is a photo taken of Routine Falls, just north of Caribou Falls Landing. The level of water shown in the photo is at a record high according to Chris. Of course, levels on our section of the English River never fluctuate too greatly, as levels are carefully controlled by the Caribou Falls Hydro Electric Dam.

News from Halley’s Camps and Lodges: Things are well at all of the main camps. Over at Caribou, Chris and Amber are busy with their little ones, and are in the planning stages for some major overhauls to the Landing. Jeff is doing well at One Man Lake Lodge, and has been just great at taking care of business as usual. And, at Kettle, Sharon and George are just going with the flow, and naturally, great as can be. As a matter of fact, Sharon is still managing all of the cooking at Kettle, and the compliments never quit. One guest has even stated that the steak dinner at Kettle Falls Lodge is as good as any Kansas City steakhouse!

May Fishing Spectacular!

June 7th, 2007

May fishing has been spectacular!! Even though we had a little rain, the fishing was so great, even that did not dampen our spirits. There have been plenty of boated trophies, too. Check out the photos! We are already looking forward to next May!

Fishing season has begun!

May 7th, 2007

May 2007
Spring has arrived, and we are welcoming it with open arms! The weather has been progressing normally and we have been having a pretty average spring. The ice went out as usual during the last week of April on the smaller lakes and creeks, with the bigger lakes following suit.

At River Air in Minaki, the airplanes will be once again returning to their place at the dock, ready and waiting for our spring anglers! Wouldn’t you like to be here right now, getting set to head out to a private outpost or perhaps to one of our all inclusive lodges?

The Future of Fishing

April 30th, 2007

Take a moment to think about the future of fishing, and think about a family fishing vacation. At Halley’s, we pride ourselves on our conservation fishing policies. Who wouldn’t want to preserve for our children the quality of outdoors experiences that we have become accustomed to?

Counting Down The Weeks!

April 10th, 2007

We are now counting down the weeks until the opening of walleye season - it will be here sooner than we think!Everyone with reservations this summer at either our lodges or our outposts should now be finalizing their travel plans. Remember that anyone travelling on international flights are now required to posess a valid passport! Travellers crossing our shared border by land will not need a passport for the 2007 season, but do need to bring photo ID and proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate. If you don’t have reservations but are still interested, it is not too late! We have a few good spots still available at a variety of our locations. Give us a call at 1-800-465-3325 and let’s go fishing!

Spring Like Weather is Here!

March 5th, 2007

We have been having a busy winter and can hardly believe how the time is flying. For the most part, we have been spoiled by the relatively great weather that we have been having - for the time of year, that is! Actually, January saw some colder temperatures as usual. In February, with the sun higher in the sky the spring like weather is just around the corner. The walleye fishing season will be here before we know it!
